Found in the 2003 GamerDad Unplugged: Christmas Shopping Guide, Bohnanza is sometimes called "The Bean Game". The back story has each player trying to raise beans, represented by cards, in their two fields for money. The problem is that beans are quite picky and refuse to share, resulting in one field holding any number of a single type of bean, but only one type. Beans are planted from your hand as well as from two cards drawn face up during your turn. The larger the set of beans you have in your field before harvesting, the more you earn in gold coins when you harvest. Problems, and fun, arise because when the time comes you are forced to plant your beans whether you want to or not! If you don't have room, you must prematurely harvest your other beans to make room. To avoid planting unwanted beans, you can trade bean cards with other players, but if they know you're itching to get rid of them, you can bet they're hoping to get a big discount. Although the suggested age is 12+, the rules are fairly simple, younger kids can easily play but are more likely to get burned on the occasional bad trade. It's a fairly quick game to pick up and not too long to play once everyone has played a few times. Another compact game as everything is represented with cards. Since no one is ever eliminated, and trading occurs almost every turn, it's a good game for groups where downtime needs to be kept to a minimum.
This is a great interaction game and is so highly portable as it is only a deck of cards. Great for encouraging family interaction, although younger players need to be sure they aren't being taken by older siblings.
