DATEVALUE

Converts a date in the form of text to a date serial number

by Charley Kyd, MBA

Syntax

DATEVALUE(date_text)

  • date_text  Required. Text that returns a date in an Excel format. The date must be January 1, 1900 or after.

If the year portion of the date is omitted, DATEVALUE uses your computer's current year. Time information in date_text is ignored.

Applies To

Excel 2003 and above

Remarks

This function often isn't needed because most functions that use date information automatically coerce (convert) the text version of the date to a date serial number.
