MONTH Function

Converts a date serial number to a month

by Charley Kyd, MBA

Returns the month number that corresponds to a date serial_number. The month is given as an integer that ranges from 1 to 12.

  • serial_number can take two forms. First, it can be the date-time code that Excel uses for date and time calculations. Second, it can be text that the DATEVALUE function could convert into a date serial number.

Applies To

Excel 2003 and above

Probably the most-frequent use of the MONTH function is in combination with the DATE function.
