# NORM.INV Function

## Returns the X value from a normal distribution, given a cumultive probability.

by Charley Kyd, MBAMicrosoft Excel MVP, 2005-2014 The Father of Spreadsheet Dashboard Reports

This function replaces the NORMINV function.

The NORM.DIST function returns the inverse of this function. That is, given the X value, mean, and standard deviation of a normal curve, NORM.DIST returns either the cumulative or non-cumulative probability value.

Syntax

=NORM.INV(probability,mean,standard_dev)

• probability A probability from the normal distribution.
• mean  The arithmetic mean of the normal distribution.
• standard_dev   The standard deviation of the normal distribution.

Applies To

Excel 2007 and above.

Remarks

• All values must be numeric.
• The probabiity must be betwen 0 and 1, inclusive.
• The standard deviation must be greater than zero.
• If the mean equals zero and the standard deviation equals 1, NORM.INV uses the standard normal distribution. (See NORM.S.INV.)
