Charley's Swipe File #11

This mini-dashboard report for Excel uses many tricks in each chart to produce a high-quality business report

Charley's Swipe File #11(Many of my swipe files use Greeking, which is fake Latin. It helps you ignore the textual content and focus on the actual charts and tables.)

Each set of swipe files comes with two PDFs for documentation: a general, eight-page "Getting Started" document, and a two-page document specific to the current swipe file.

Usage Ideas

By changing the size of this figure, or by adding, moving, or deleting charts, you could use this figure just about anywhere: in Word or PowerPoint, as Excel display, on your web site, and so on.

From the documentation for this swipe file...

This figure uses more tricks per square inch than any other figure in this series so far.

Before I explain what these tricks are, look at this figure and try to decide where tricks are needed and what they might be. If you’re going to learn how to create your own figures from scratch, you’ll need to be able to do this on your own.

All titles and comments use formulas to get their text from cells in a support sheet. But how can values returned by formulas be displayed as they are in the charts and title?

The four lines of the title nearly touch. And the text is in different colors. How is this achieved?

Notice the line on each side of the Growth label at the bottom of the blue charts. How is this line generated?

How are the date labels generated within each column?

How is the gray row of white text generated in the blue charts?

These the key tricks we must create for this figure. Let’s see how they’re done…

(Continued in the documentation.)
