This professional-quality Excel chart compares changes in A vs B over time, like men vs women, old vs new customers, trained vs untrained, etc.

Charley's Swipe File #19This figure shows the relative changes in A vs B relationships over time, or for categories other than time buckets.

The original published figure showed Democrat vs Republican. This one shows Domestic vs Foreign. You could use the same style for Men vs Women, Old vs New customers, Trained vs Untrained, and so on.

To create the figure, I had to overcome several interesting challenges:

  • How to set up the blue Domestic and red Foreign labels, and center them above the zero line of the chart.
  • Add the gray shading.
  • Display the red and blue horizontal lines with the circular markers.
  • Keep Excel from displaying labels at the very top and bottom of the chart.
  • Etc.

The chart and documentation explain all.

Usage Ideas

This chart is set up so that you easily can use it to display "A vs B" performance for any categories you want, not just time. For example, you could replace the year labels with the names of people, or products, or customers, geographic regions, or whatever.

You can use it in a dashboard, or in any presentation where a professional appearance matters.

From the documentation for this swipe file...

To set up the markers, I clicked on the end points of each line and formatted the markers as shown.

Excel doesnt make it easy to select specific points in a line, rather than the entire line; but if you try several times you can do it. Remember that if you select the point, you dont need to right-click it to select Format Data Point from the right-click menu. Instead, with the point selected, you can....
