Charley's Swipe File #31

This professional Excel chart, which shows percentage performance by category, can be used to compare percentages for virtually any data.

Charley's Swipe File #31This chart was sparked by one in the Washington Post that showed student enrollment by ethnic category for schools in Washington DC. It used four columns of charts to show four ethnic categories, with one dot per line rather than the two I use here.

I originally converted it into a chart showing profit margins per product per year. But you could use it to compare percentages for virtually any data. So I generalized the chart for the Swipe Files by using the “greeking” text rather than using text about profit margins or school attendance.

Notice how I turned the bottom borders for the 2010 and 2011 column headings into a legend. This is a compact way to show the category that each dot labels.

The most difficult task about creating this figure is to create the first two SERIES formulas. After that, you can create the others by copying and pasting them.
