Charley File #39This chart answers a question that managers in a business ask frequently, “How are we doing so far this year?”

Specifically, it compares year-to-date performance for the current month with performance for the same period in prior years. It also shows annual performance for prior years.

To do so, this chart relies on formulas that calculate annual and YTD performance from a column of monthly sales data.

Although this version shows sales history, it could show any performance that’s tracked on both a monthly and annual basis.

This chart demonstrates the use of four useful Excel techniques:

  1. The X axis uses two number formats.
  2. Both sets of columns rely on the SUMPRODUCT function.
  3. The annual and YTD columns in the chart overlap, and have different widths.
  4. The OFFSET function is one key to keeping the two sets of columns synchronized.
